About Poetry Wednesbury
The Poetry Wednesbury organisation was formed in 2001 by Geoff Stevens and Brendan Hawthorne to provide a platform for poets in the area to perform, discuss their work, and have it published.
After starting its monthly meetings in Wednesbury Public Library, it moved its venue to various local pubs before settling at The George for 18 months. Then we came back to the Library for another year. Meetings are now held at the old Post Office building on Holyhead Road on the last Thursday of every month at 7.30 pm, are open to everyone, and are free. A small fee is charged for refreshments. There is no meeting during December due to the intervention of Christmas.
At the end of 2006 Poetry Wednesbury Publishing was launched, partially funded by Sandwell Council, in order to meet PW’s third aim, and with a remit to provide a platform for the local community by way of small press printing and publishing.
As well as appearances at Wednesbury Art Festival, National Poetry Conventions and regular performances at Birmingham Arts Fest, members continue to appear at local venues such as Bloxwich Library Theatre, Walsall New Art Gallery, Walsall Library, Halesowen's Shenstone Theatre, and The Barlow Theatre in Langley.
Several books, magazines, CDs and video CDs featuring members are available. (See Publications.)
Please feel free to come along and read your work, or just listen. Or perhaps you'd like to take part in one of our workshops?
